STARTUP365 – with Cooper Washington:
Scott Carrington Interview

STARTUP365 welcomed back an old friend to the show for this week’s episode as ‘startup guru’ and business consultant, Scott Carrington, joined host Cooper Washington, for his record eighth appearance. Scott was on STARTUP365 to give his insights into the startup industries to watch in the short-term.

The highly profitable and even ‘obsessive’ world of social gaming was covered first by Scott but his angle was not straightforward of course. For him, there is always a far more considered, interesting angle when exploring an up-and-coming company or industry. Carrington was far more fascinated with the application of the procedures and nuances of the social gaming industry into more of the mundane chores that people encounter each day. Such integration should make duties such as paying a check into the bank or changing broadband provider far more ‘enjoyable’.

Exploring all of the facets that make social gaming so enduring and addictive, Scott’s vision for the next eighteen months in this sector was very clear to him. Using social gaming to create customer avatars for bank accounts, including access to personal statistics or allowing someone to even personalize their page, is plainly obvious and just around the corner. ‘Entertaining’ the customer by allowing them to ‘level up’ their account or allowing them to buy emojis or other ‘soft items’ didn’t limit Carrington’s vision. He also saw amazing use for the banks themselves. Allowing the banks to tap into their customers’ psyches, they can also gear their offers and other products on an individual level, making their customers’ life time value far more efficient and affective.

“Anything and everything to give a user more information to enhance their experience is happening right now and this area is growing very quickly.”
Scott Carrington, Startup Guru & Independent Consultant.

When Cooper pressed Scott for more areas of significant growth in the startup industry, he saw the fusion of the aforementioned social gaming sector, with the amazing development in the use of customer feedback data.

Carrington sees the classic marketing discipline of ‘knowing your customer’ as key to enhancing not only a business’ bottom line but the whole user experience; adding it to social gaming philosophy, it’s an unbeatable combination.

“…we’ve got the next generation of user experience across the board.”
Scott Carrington, Startup Guru & Independent Consultant.

Bringing in STARTUP365’s runners up in the ‘Innovation of the Year’ award, Qualtrics, into the conversation, Scott explained that the wealth of information generated even when initial forms are filled in, coupled with purchases, can provide any business with a complete portfolio about individuals. Companies like Qualtrics are turning this information into solutions and the enhancement of not only the customer experience but primarily to the advantage of the vendor. Frustratingly, time passed too quickly this time around but Scott will surely be on STARTUP365 again, real soon for a record-extending, ninth visit. If the revelations from his predictions at the top of the show about communication startup giant ‘WhatsApp’ are anything to go by, we will be seeing yet another gaze into the future, right here on STARTUP365; next year will be very interesting indeed.
